It is a bitter expose of capitalist exploitation and a fierce denunciation of materialism, which threatens the human imagination in all times and places. With a typically unforgettable cast of characters Hard Times carries a powerful message and remains one of the most widely read of Dickens's major novels. Book group meetings are normally held on the fourth Monday of every month in the library at 7:00 p.m. Each meeting starts with a poem selected and read by a member with a brief discussion following the reading. New members are always welcome. The Kensington Library is open Mondays and Tuesdays 12 to 8 p.m., closed Wednesdays, open Thursdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 to 5 p.m. Phone number: (510) 524-3043.
