Welcome to Room 23!

Reading Log (Word document)

Questions to ask about books

Room 23 is a fourth grade classroom. A priority in our classroom is working together as a learning community.

Two of the most important homework assigments are reading daily and writing in the student's Home Writing Log, a spiral notebook supplied by the teacher.

Daily reading continues to be important to students throughout schooling. All students need to build vocabulary and reading fluency by continuing to read frequently and choosing increasingly challenging material. As students get in the upper elementary grades, middle school and high school, reading to learn subject matter such as science and social studies becomes increasingly important.

Even older students who are proficient readers can still benefit from adult support. Students should be talking to someone about the stories they read, using skills such as summarizing, visualizing, predicting, questioning, and making connections to their own lives or other reading material. Students should be encouraged to ask the meanings of new words, and to use clues in the text to figure out the meanings.

Students should complete a Reading Log each week.

Students are expected to write at least three pages weekly in their Writing Logs, though many students write more. Students can choose from a wide variety of topics and formatss. The log will be most useful if students use it to extend their learning of topics and writing skills we are working on in class.

A newsletter with information on what we are studying, school news, important dates and homework is sent home each Friday. Homework is normally due the following Friday, and should be completed on time so we can go over it together on Friday. Parents or students who wish to receive this newsletter by email should contact me at the address below.

Students can practice many of the skills we learn in class (based on California content standards) using the skills and activities linked on K-6 Resources.
