Work To Restore Library To Continue Over Summer
Hundreds of books have arrived, by the box load and bagful, from local and out of state addresses.
The library fund at Mechanics Bank stands at almost $18,000. Barnes and Noble will partner
with Castro to raise funds during two shopping days later this year. District library staff
has been approved to work overtime over the summer to process and barcode books for
circulation. Still, we have a long way to go before a functional library can open at Castro next fall.
District librarians have already begun processing some of the new books volunteers
have culled from the hundreds of donated volumes. This is just the beginning
of the many tasks that lie ahead.
Work parties will be organized over the summer to deal with a number of jobs. First will be the large
task of going through all the donated books and sorting them. Once the portable arrives, shelves
will need to be installed and furniture unboxed (possibly needing assembly), then moved in. Computers
will also need to be installed and wired for use. Only then can we begin shelving the processed books.
We will need a large number of volunteers to help with all these jobs if the library is to be ready for
use this fall.
Karyn Noel is in the process of collecting email addresses and phone numbers of Castro families
interested in helping over the summer. Whether you can help for a few hours or several days
over the summer break, each and every volunteer who signs up is needed and valued. We will
especially be in need of some strong bodies later in the summer when the actual moving of books
and furniture will take place. If you would like to be kept abreast of library progress and receive
updates of work parties and specific jobs needing to be done, please contact Karyn at
