What to put in your portfolio

By the end of the school year, your portfolio should contain at least one strong example of each of the following items.

£ Narrative (story)
- Well organized (has beginning, middle and end; problem and solution)
- Descriptive language

£ Summary of  nonfiction
- Paraphrased (in own words)
- Clearly states main idea and supports with most important details

£ Response to literature
- Demonstrates clear understanding of the literary work. Goes beyond summarizing the story to show what message or theme the author might have intended to convey a lesson that might be learned from the story, or an analysis of a major character.
- Supports inferences and judgments with specific examples from the text

£ Information report on topic related to grade-level science or social studies standards
- Paraphrased (in own words)
- Organized and written in a logical order, such as chronological order or by subtopic. Begins with an introduction that draws the reader's interest and introduces the topic. Ends with a conclusion.
- Supported with appropriate details and using transitional expressions that link one paragraph to another in a clear line of thought
- Used and appropriately cited more than one source of information
(Please turn in two copies, one for your portfolio and one for your classroom library.)

£ Booklets on science topics - Earth science (rocks and minerals and changes to the Earth's surface), physical science (electromagnetism)

£ Booklets on California history/geography (The second one should be bound in June, since we are still producing the pages.)

You are welcome to put other examples of your best work in your portfolio, too!

All examples should be carefully edited for sentence structure and correct spelling, grammar, capitalization and punctuation.
